El Retiro Finca & Lodge is a farm certified as a “Private Natural Reserve” located in Pochuta, Chimaltenango, conforming part of the lake's Atitlán basin.
The farm’s biosphere is catalogued as “subtropical forest” rising to 3000 feet -900mts- above sea level.
El Retiro has a wide variety of trees, plants, birds, insects, flora and fauna, as well as water springs, small rivers and water falls. Additionally from the forest, the farm has an organic-ecological coffee and banana plantation (certified in the United States and Europe).
This combination makes El Retiro a unique and innovative ecological attraction, because of the biodiversity and the “associated crops” which promote sustainability to the ecosystem.
El Retiro is home to a small ‘Kackchiquel’ ethic community of people, of which some families are actively working on the Finca; this adds a multicultural element to the visit and also provides much needed work for the local people.
“Agro-eco tourism” at el Retiro has many different trails where you can appreciate the nature of its forests, organic plantations of coffee and bananas under the canopies of its trees and also horseback riding.
Other possibilities for touring include mountain biking tours and a visit to the small town called Pochuta. We are conveniently located just 45 minutes from San Lucas Tolimán, on the lake side of the spectacular Lake Atitlán.
